    About us

Opening in 1975, the Centre was originally the idea of the then Suffragan Bishop of Bradwell, and was based at St. John’s, Pier Hill. It was moved from there in 1989 to St Barnabas, Hadleigh, because of the lack of parking facilities and the fact that St John's roof was badly damaged in the storm of 1989.

It was formed by those who were concerned about the standard of teaching of religious faiths in schools and lack of good, well produced resources. It supplied books, audio-visuals and artefact collections for teachers and pupils that clarified and enhanced the curriculum.

Churches and religious groups were also interested in the idea of an inter-denominational, inter-faith link, and a central pool of resources for use by all who were interested.

The original representatives came from Essex & Southend L.E.A, Chelmsford Diocese (C of E), Brentwood Diocese (R.C.), Methodists, Baptists, U.R.C., Christian Scientists and the Jewish, Hindu and Muslim Communities.

We would welcome renewed contact with more of these Faith Communities or other Christian Organisations to provide us with information on new resources and possibly to join our Management Team.

    Management Team

SEREC provides a much needed resource of great value to the Schools and Faith Communities of our locality. To make its work most effective it requires the commitment of a Management Team , who meet three times a year and support the weekly work carried out by the Administrator and Assistant, who is also the Treasurer. See Membership and Funding for more details.

All the members are volunteers from among the Community, who bring with them a variety of interests and expertise. They also have an overriding commitment to promote and extend the advantages that such a Centre brings, to those engaged in the work of broadening our horizons, in matters of faith and spirituality.

At the moment we represent Methodist, C of E, Baptist, Ministers, Lay and Primary Schools. We are always ready to welcome new members to broaden our Group, please contact us if you are interested.

This Centre belongs to you and all who benefit from it, and we welcome all input on new resources, ideas for courses, information on what courses, support groups, ecumenical projects local Christian & other Faith organisations are providing.
